Brumby/Shetland Pony

Moonshine was the Bomen Saleyards $35 Wonder!
Julia and her mother attended a horse sale at Bomen (Wagga Wagga) Saleyards in 1981 looking for a going pony. Nothing seemed to be suitable, so Julia went and help friend, Dorothy, change her 3 little girls. When she came back her Mum had a confession - she could not let a pinto pony go to the dogger, and the dogger had let Mum have her for $35.

Before we left the saleyards it became obvious the very young pony filly was unbroken and had never been on a float. She was quietly persuaded into the float, travelled well, offloaded, fed, and left to settle with Smokey in his yard next door. The humans went for dinner and to debate the new pony's name. Next thing they knew the pony had jumped out of her yard!

Eventually, after 3 hours trying to catch the wild pony, Julia went inside, was presented with a variety of names, Dukes Of Hazzard was half way through and they were running moonshine whiskey.

Upon the stating that there was no way she was calling a pony Little Sioux, while briefly watching a trademark Dukes of Hazzard car chase, Julia declared the pony's name was Moonshine! She had been chasing the damned pony around the paddock for 3 hours, ie running Moonshine!

Moonshine was broken in by Des Gleeson and led an eventful life, falling down an underground tank and living to tell the tale, riding many miles on gossip gathering expeditions, and in her later years teaching and droving and being a superb all-round pony. She died while on loan to the Fealy family at a very young 18 years old, taken swiftly by a heart attack.

She is buried with her last family, remembered as a much loved pony and friend.
