Smokey was Julia's first pony. Smokey was quite obviously a purebred Welsh Section B gelding with a highly accomplished show ring past. He was also an old reprobate. Julia never discovered his past, his brands were unable to be read, but he was much loved.

Smokey was one of those superb ponies who taught all his beginners to ride with care and consideration, but after teaching them to ride it was time for them to move on to a younger horse. He would eject the rider from his saddle if necessary to achieve this objective.

Smokey liked nothing better than a good beer, bucket sized, if possible! He had to be removed from the vicinity of cabaret balls in the tiny town of Pleasant Hills where Julia grew up, or he would be drunk the next morning!

Smokey was sold to the best of homes at 24 years old and spent the last 6 years of his life with the Weston family of Henty. He died at the ripe old age of 30 - not bad for a pony that arrived while at death's door from founder when he was 20.
